Steam Train Driver for a Day at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo BOOKING FORM

Take this exclusive opportunity to experience stram train driving at the wonderful Whipsnade Zoo! Observe animals such as Indian rhinos, Asian elephants, camels and deers as you pass by on the Great Whipsnade Railway. You'll even get the chance to go behind the scenes at the railway yard and find out what a typical day as a steam train driver is like and with plenty of tea or coffees and a delicious lunch included this really is a wonderfully authentic experience.

Day Schedule

Your day as an honorary steam train driver will give you the opportunity to shovel coal, test the brakes and couple carriages and handle the controls of a powerful steam locomotive. As well as driving the train for 8 miles on the 2ft 6in narrow gauge heritage railway, you will get behind the scenes at our railway yard and find out what a typical day is actually like as a train driver on the Great Whipsnade Railway (a.k.a the Jumbo Express). You'll also receive a health and safety briefing upon arrival and the experience includes lunch and plenty of cups of tea and coffee to keep you going throughout the day!

This voucher is valid until 04.10.12 for one person. This experience is available on 12 selected dates; eight in March 2012 and four in October 2012 - we advise you to book early as places are limited. Participants must be 18 years of age and be physically and mentally fit with reasonable hearing and vision. In particular, participants must be capable of climbing up and descending the vertical steps between the footplate of the locomotive and ground level (at least 6 inches/15cm). There is no upper age limit, although participants will need a reasonable level of fitness to take part in the activities. This experience is suitable for beginners and for those with some train driving experience. The experience runs from 9.00am - 3.30pm. This voucher cannot be extended. All dates are subject to availability.
